We were chatting with our physiotherapist friend the other day about losing strength and mobility when getting older.

We talked about the big shift happening right now, especially the encouragement for women 50+ to lift heavy weights. And yes, strength training is very important. Building and maintaining muscle supports bone health, balance and long-term independence.

But he also said something that aligned with our thinking. He said the most important thing is to keep moving. He also said that bodyweight movement, simple body weight squats, squat holds, lunges, plank holds… that they are just as powerful. Especially if you’re able to do this style of movement more consistently.

Because in the end the ‘results’ are not about how heavy you can lift

The results are about how well you can move. Can you get up off the floor with ease? Can you catch you balance when you stumble? Can you move without stiffness or hesitation?

These are some of the clearest signs of real, functional strength and mobility.

4. You Feel Strong in Some Areas, But Weak in Others

This is very common.

Many people walk, run or exercise regularly but still have areas of weakness, especially in:

  • hips

  • core

  • glutes

  • stabilising muscles
