Why Some Women Stay Strong, Mobile and Independent and Others Don’t

It’s tempting to think it comes down to genetics, or that some people are just naturally more mobile or more athletic. But the truth is much simpler than that. The women who stay strong, mobile and independent are the ones who keep moving, consistently, and in a way that supports their body.

Not extreme workouts. Not pushing through pain. Just regular movement.

Here’s what that actually looks like and how you can start today, no matter where you are right now.

It’s Not About Intense Workouts

There’s a big shift happening right now in the fitness world, and it’s a good one. More women are being encouraged to build strength as they get older.

But somewhere along the way, the message got a bit loud. Suddenly it felt like if you weren’t lifting heavy or doing high-intensity training, you weren’t doing enough.

The reality? Your body doesn’t need extreme to stay strong.

What it needs is:

  • movement that challenges your muscles safely
  • exercises that build strength without breaking you down
  • something you can do regularly, not just when you feel motivated

Bodyweight exercises like squats, lunges, planks and yoga and Pilates-based movements are so effective. They build real, functional strength, the kind that helps you carry groceries, get up off the floor, and move through your day with confidence.

Don’t get us wrong, if you love to lift heavy keep going… but if you are not a fan, or it’s not accessible… don’t stress! You don’t need a gym membership or heavy weights. You need movement that meets you where you are.

It’s About Consistent, Supportive Movement

This is the part most people skip over.

It’s not the one big workout that makes the difference. It’s what you do regularly that shapes how your body feels over time.

Think about it: 10 minutes of Yoga or Pilates, 4-5 times a week, adds up to more movement, and more benefit, than one intense session followed by days, weeks (or even months) of nothing.

Consistency is the real secret. And consistency only happens when:

  • the movement feels good (not punishing)
  • it fits into your life schedule
  • you actually enjoy it

This is exactly why we created MerryBody, daily Yoga and Pilates classes that are 10 to 30 minutes, designed to fit your life, and focused on helping you feel good in your body.

When movement feels supportive rather than stressful, you keep showing up. And that’s when your body starts to change.

Mobility Matters as Much as Strength

Strength gets a lot of attention, and it should. But mobility is just as important, and it doesn’t get nearly enough credit.

Mobility is your ability to move your joints through their full range of motion, freely and without pain. It’s what lets you:

  • reach overhead without strain
  • bend down comfortably
  • turn your head, twist your body, move in all directions
  • recover quickly when you stumble or lose balance

Without mobility, even strong muscles can’t do their job properly. You might have the strength to stand up from a chair, but if your hips are tight and your ankles are stiff, it’s going to feel hard.

This is why Yoga is such a powerful complement to Pilates. Pilates gives you the strength. Yoga opens up the body, improves flexibility and range of motion, and helps release the tension that builds up from sitting, stress and daily life.

Together, Yoga and Pilates give you both: the strength to support your body and the mobility to move it well.

The Nervous System and Movement Connection

Here’s something most people don’t think about: your nervous system plays a huge role in how your body moves, and how it feels.

When your nervous system is constantly in a stressed state it can look like many things. It can be heightened anxiety,  overthinking, brain fog, forgetfulness and irritability. But it also impacts the physical body, your body responds by tightening up. You might feel:

  • tension in your shoulders, neck or jaw
  • shallow breathing
  • a general sense of heaviness or fatigue
  • difficulty relaxing, even when you want to

Yes, it isn’t just mental and emotional, it’s physical. A dysregulated nervous system makes your muscles tighter, your joints stiffer and your body less responsive.

This is where mindful movement becomes so effective. Practices like Yoga and Pilates, especially when paired with breath work, help calm the nervous system. They shift your body from a state of tension into a state of ease.

And when your nervous system is calm, everything works better. You move more freely. You feel less pain. You sleep better. You recover faster.

It’s not just about building muscle, it’s about creating the conditions where your body can actually thrive.

The Real Goal: Staying Capable in Daily Life

At the end of the day, this isn’t about how you look. It’s not about hitting a fitness goal or keeping up with anyone else.

It’s about being capable. Independent. Confident in your own body.

It’s about:

  • playing with your grandchildren without worrying about your knees
  • travelling and walking for hours because you feel strong enough
  • getting up and down from the floor with ease
  • waking up without stiffness and moving through your day feeling good
  • knowing your body is supported, no matter what life brings

This is what longevity really means. Not living longer, but living better. Feeling capable, mobile and strong for all the years ahead.

And it starts with simple, consistent, supportive movement.
