Fire Log Pose is one of those poses that really invites you to slow down and feel into your body. It’s a deep hip opener that gets its name from the way we stack our shins, just like logs on a campfire. If you’ve been feeling a little tight in the hips or lower back, this is a beautiful way to find some release and create a bit of space.
We love this pose because it’s so grounding. It’s the perfect shape to come into when you need to reconnect with yourself after a busy day. Whether you’re looking to increase your flexibility or just want a moment of stillness, Fire Log Pose meets you exactly where you are.
In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to set up this pose comfortably, including some of our favourite ways to use props to make it feel just right for your unique body.
How To Do Agnistambhasana (Fire Log Pose)
Find your seat
Start by sitting comfortably on your mat with your legs extended. If you find your lower back rounding, try sitting on the edge of a folded blanket or a cushion to help tilt your pelvis forward and find a bit more length in your spine.
Stack your logs
Bend your right knee and bring your right shin parallel to the top of your mat. Then, gently place your left ankle on top of your right knee. You’re aiming to stack your shins like two logs, with your left knee resting toward your right ankle.
Support and flex
Flex both of your feet to help protect your knee joints. If there’s a big gap between your top knee and bottom foot, don’t worry at all! You can slide a block or a rolled-up towel into that space to give your leg something to rest on. This helps your muscles feel safe enough to actually let go.
Lengthen and settle
Sit tall and feel your sit-bones grounding into the earth. You can keep your hands resting on your knees or by your sides. If it feels good and you want to explore a little deeper, you might start to walk your hands forward, but only go as far as feels nourishing for your body today.
Breathe and hold
Close your eyes and take some slow, deep breaths. If you’re practising this as a Yin Yoga shape, you might choose to stay here for 3 to 5 minutes, allowing gravity to do the work. When you’re ready, gently release and make sure to swap sides so you can honour both hips equally.

The Benefits of Agnistambhasana (and Yoga in General)
Physically, Fire Log Pose is one of those poses that really gets into the deep tissues of the hips. It targets the glutes and the outer hips, helping to release tension that we often carry from sitting or even just the busyness of daily life. By stacking the shins, you’re creating a deep opening that can help improve your range of motion and ease any tightness in the lower back.
Beyond the physical stretch, this pose is a wonderful way to soothe the nervous system. Because it’s a grounded, seated shape, it encourages us to slow down and tune into our breath. If you’re feeling a bit frazzled or overwhelmed, spending a few minutes here can help shift you into a state of calm and presence.
This is what we love about Yoga — it’s not just about becoming more flexible or strong. It’s about creating a little pocket of peace in your day and learning to sit comfortably with yourself, exactly as you are.
