How to Do Baddha Virabhadrasana Pose


We absolutely love Humble Warrior because it’s such a beautiful blend of strength and surrender. It’s one of those poses that makes you feel incredibly powerful in your lower body while allowing you to find a sense of softness and humility through your upper body. It’s a wonderful way to open up the hips and shoulders while building a solid foundation.

In our practice, we often use this pose to check in with ourselves. It’s a deep stretch for the legs and a heart-opener all in one, helping us to release tension we might be carrying in our chest. Whether you’re feeling energetic or a little bit tired, this pose meets you exactly where you are.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to feel into your Humble Warrior, with plenty of options to make the pose work for your unique body.

How To Do Baddha Virabhadrasana (Humble Warrior Pose)

Find your foundation
Start standing tall at the top of your mat in Tadasana. Take a generous step back with your left foot, about three or four feet. Keep your right toes pointing forward and turn your back foot in slightly, finding a steady foundation.

Align your torso
Rotate your torso to face the front of your mat, squaring your hips as much as feels okay for your body. Gently engage your core to help you feel stable and supported from the inside out.

Sink into the lunge
Sink into your front knee, making sure it stays stacked directly over your ankle. Find a depth in your lunge that feels strong but sustainable, keeping your back leg active and pressed into the earth.

Bind your hands
Reach your arms behind your back and interlace your fingers. If your shoulders feel tight, you can always hold onto a strap or a towel between your hands. Press your palms together if that’s accessible to help open through the chest.

Humbly bow forward
Lengthen through your spine, reaching the crown of your head toward the sky. Take a big, beautiful breath in here, and as you exhale, gently bow your torso forward inside your right knee.

If you’re practising this as a more restorative hold in Yin Yoga, you might choose to rest your head on a block for extra support.

Breathe and release
Stay here for 30 seconds to a minute, or longer if it feels good. Focus on your steady breath, feeling the strength in your legs and the release in your shoulders. When you’re ready, slowly rise up, release the hands, and step back to the top of your mat to swap sides.

The act of bowing forward encourages a sense of introspection and helps to quiet the mind, reducing feelings of stress or anxiety. It requires a lovely blend of focus and surrender, helping you to build mental resilience while staying connected to your breath.
