How to Do Tarasana Pose

Welcome to the beautiful practice of Tarasana, or Star Pose. This is one of those poses that looks simple but feels absolutely magic when you take a moment to really feel into it. It’s all about expansion, grounding, and letting your inner light shine bright.

We love how this pose helps us find our centre while stretching through the arms and opening up the heart space. Whether you’re feeling a bit closed off or just need a moment to breathe and reset, Star Pose is like a big, warm hug for your nervous system.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to find your own version of this celestial pose, with plenty of room to make it feel just right for your body today.

How To Do Tarasana (Star Pose)

Find your ground
Begin by standing tall on your mat with your feet parallel and about hip-distance apart. Feel the weight evenly distributed across your feet, gently pressing into the earth to find your foundation.

Lengthen your spine
As you stand tall, imagine a soft thread drawing the crown of your head toward the sky, lengthening your spine. Engage your core just a little bit to support your back, keeping everything feeling light and spacious.

Expand your reach
Inhale as you reach your arms out wide to the sides, keeping them parallel to the floor with your palms facing down. If your shoulders feel a bit tight, feel free to lower your arms slightly or soften your elbows—honour what your body needs.

Open your heart
Broaden across your collarbones and lift your chest slightly, opening up your heart space. Feel the energy radiating all the way from your heart out through your fingertips, like a shining star.

Breathe and soften
Take a few deep, nourishing breaths here, softening your shoulders away from your ears with every exhale. If you’re practising this as a more restorative “Yin Yoga” style moment, you might even choose to close your eyes and just feel the stillness for a minute or two.

The Benefits of Tarasana (and Yoga in General)

Tarasana is such a beautiful way to improve your posture and find a sense of balance. By grounding through your feet and lengthening your spine, you’re strengthening your core and opening up through the chest. It’s a gentle way to create space in the heart and shoulders, helping you stand a little taller and feel more expansive in your physical body.

Beyond the physical, this pose is a wonderful tool for calming the nervous system. The combination of mindful breathing and the steady, rooted stance helps to lower stress levels and clear away mental clutter. It’s a pose that invites focus and a sense of quiet confidence, making it a perfect go-to when you need to find your centre during a busy day.

This is what we love about Yoga — it’s not just about becoming more flexible or strong. It’s about creating the space to breathe, reconnecting with your inner sparkle, and remembering that you are already enough, exactly as you are.
