Hero Pose, or Virasana, is one of those beautiful, grounding postures that invites us to find a moment of stillness amidst the busyness of life. It’s a kneeling pose that offers a deep, nourishing stretch for the thighs and ankles while helping us sit tall and breathe a little deeper.
We love using this pose as a starting point for meditation or simply as a way to check in with how we’re feeling. It’s a powerful way to ground your energy and settle into your space, whether you’re just starting your day or winding down for a restful evening.

How To Do Virasana (Hero Pose)
Start in a kneeling position
Begin by kneeling on your mat with your knees about hip-width apart. Keep your thighs and shins parallel, and take a moment to feel the connection of your legs against the Earth.
Lower your hips with care
Slowly lower your hips down toward your heels. If your sit-bones don’t quite reach the floor or if there’s any intensity in the knees, please grab a block, bolster, or a folded blanket to sit on—this is a wonderful way to honour your joints.
Align your feet and toes
Point your feet straight back so the tops of your feet are resting flat on the mat. Try to keep your toes pointing directly behind you rather than turning inward, creating a nice even line through your ankles.
Lengthen your spine and relax
Gently lift through the crown of your head to find length in your spine, while softening your shoulders away from your ears. Rest your hands lightly on your thighs with your palms facing down for grounding, or up if you’re feeling open to receiving.
Breathe and feel into it
Close your eyes and settle into the sensation. If you’re practising this as part of a “Yin Yoga” sequence, you might stay here for 3-5 minutes, otherwise, a few minutes of deep, conscious breathing is perfect.
Release the pose slowly
When you’re ready to come out, lean forward to take the weight into your hands and gently lift your hips. Step back into a tabletop position or stretch your legs out one at a time to let the circulation flow back through your knees.
