We do love shopping for fresh fruit and veggies. But not every second day! We like to buy our vegetables once a week and make them stay fresh!
This is what we do to keep vegetables fresh.
Keep in the fruit bowl on the bench until ripe.
This goes for bananas, avocados, tomatoes, apples, melons, pears. Once they ripen eat them all up or place in the fridge.
If you want to slow down the ripening process put the above produce in the fridge. Especially good if you buy avocados in bulk!
This fruit goes straight in the fridge.
Citrus (oops we didn’t do this before!), grapes, berries. Make sure you don’t wash the berries first… wash as you eat.
Store these veggies in an air tight bag/container in the crisper.
Capsicum (peppers), brussel sprouts, bok choy, broccoli, asparagus, cauliflower, eggplant, cut pumpkin (wrapped in cling wrap), zucchini (cloth or paper work better than plastic),
Store in the dark in the cupboard.
This goes for potatoes, garlic and onions. Just make sure it’s not together.
For leafy greens.
We wash our leafy greens as soon as we get them. Fill the sink up with cold water and whack all the leaves in. Place in a salad spinner to dry out or on tea towels to pat dry. We store ours in a plastic container with air holes or sealed bags with air in them. But this looks like a cool idea!
For mushrooms.
We keep them in the brown paper bag they come in, then in the vegetable crisper.
When there’s a bad apple.
As soon as one thing gets off and looks a bit sad we chuck it out so it doesn’t give off any gas to make other stuff go off quicker. Yes that actually happens!
Only buy what you need.
We always work out what we need to buy before we go shopping. Meal planning is the best! We work out when we’re at home and how many meals we need to cook. We go over to Mum and dads a few times a week (because fun) and we go out for dinner at least once a week (again fun, delicious). Stuck for meal plan ideas? Checkout our Make Life Merry challenge!
When plans change.
If we’ve overbought fruit and veg we will cut it all up and freeze it. So we have our own frozen veggies to cook! Great for busy week day cooking! We always freeze our fresh herbs as we usually struggle to get through the whole bunch.
We’d love to hear your tips! Add them in the comments!
Always merrymaking,
Emma + Carla
