CANBERRA: Give The Gift of Healthy Food this Holiday Season to Lanyon Food Hub.

Food is extremely important to us (+ to everyone!).  It’s the fuel that keeps us going, gets our brains + bodies working. It’s also seriously yummy, fun + social. As we get more + more involved with nourishing + healthy food (that is: reading about it, cooking it, writing about it, eating it!) we notice how confusing + hard it can be for some.

Not everyone is so lucky to have easy access to healthy food. We’re asking our fellow Canberrans to give the gift of healthy food this holiday season. Read on to find out how you can help.

Introducing YWCA + the Lanyon Food Hub. As you may know we are proud Canberrans + proud to be able to help our community. Here’s some info about the amazing work the dedicated YWCA staff + amazing volunteers do.

‘Research tells us that in 2011 there were more than 25 000 disadvantaged people living in Canberra, ACT, more than 20 000 people were living in poverty, and 14 000 were experiencing financial stress.

The YWCA of Canberra’s Mura Lanyon Youth and Community Centre is a service, where young people and families from the Lanyon and South Tuggeranong region can access quality recreational activities and education programs to strengthen and build their wellbeing, resilience, and community participation.

An important part of the centre is the Food Hub, a pantry-like system where people in need can access free, healthy, nutritious food.’

The other week we had our gym’s Christmas party (FUNCtional Fitness Australia) + we made lots of delicious healthy treats + energising smoothies for everyone. Because Func is awesome, the rule was that everyone made a donation + in return got a treat or smoothie.

Through competitions, massages + our treats + smoothies Func raised over $500 for the Lanyon Food Hub.

You can help too!

If you are in Canberra + interested in helping out your local community this Christmas, you can donate food, by selecting from the list below + placing it in a basket, box or bag + delivering it to 1 of the drop off locations.

  • Tinned tomatoes, carrots, peas, or other vegies
  • Tinned fruits
  • Jars breakfast spreads
  • Tinned tuna or salmon
  • Fruit juice or lemon cordial
  • Long-life milk
  • Packets of nuts + dried fruit

Food donations can be delivered to the YWCA of Canberra Central Office (161 London Circuit, Canberra ACT) or VSpot Café (near the merry-go-round in the City) between 9am + 5pm. All food donations must be delivered by 5pm on the 17 December.

There’s nothing more special than giving to those in need this holiday season, that way, everyone’s Christmas can be merry.

Always merrymaking,

Emma + Carla
