Your brain doesn’t know the difference between what you’re thinking and what’s actually happening in real life.
What we mean by this is that the brain and body react the same way whether you’re thinking about a situation or whether the situation is actually happening.
This means, if you let the mind think and think and think about all the things that could possibly go wrong (without doing this purposefully, for example, if you’re practicing stoicism this is a different story), your brain and body will respond as if everything is in fact going wrong.
For example, you have a big presentation to do in front of hundreds of people. Your mind starts to race.
What if I stumble on stage? What if I stuff up my slides? What if I forget what to say? What if they ask me a question I don’t know the answer to?!
You’re thinking these thoughts, seeing this play out and your brain and body respond accordingly. Your brain and body don’t know these things are simply thoughts. The body switches on the Sympathetic Nervous System, the fight or flight and produces cortisol and adrenalin to respond to the stressful situation.
When you’re under this kind of stress it is has been found that you have less focus, foggy thinking, you lack problem solving skills and are more likely to make rushed and ‘bad’ decisions.
We talk more about this during the Live IGTV below. Have you had a similar situation pan out?
Now that you know this fact, you can have the same AHA! moment that we had: if I bring more awareness to my thoughts then I have more control over the stress in my life.
But HOW do you bring more awareness to your thoughts? One of the easiest ways to do this is by meditation and breathwork.
It doesn’t have to be complicated, in fact, once you know the techniques, you can go back to them again and again.
We will be guiding you through Meditation, Breathwork, Yoga and Pilates during our upcoming FREE De-Stress Masterclass.
You don’t want to miss out. It’s all happening on 30 September 12 midday AEST. It’s free and you can sign up here.
All you need for this Free Masterclass is an internet connection and your amazing self!
After the 55ish minute session you’ll come away with doable and practical techniques to manage daily stress. You’ll also feel a sense of focus and calm as we will actually practice the techniques together during the session.
Look forward to seeing you there! And if you can’t make the Live scheduled Masterclass, sign up anyway, as we will send you out a replay!
Always merrymaking,
Emma + Carla
