Carla sent me a photo of her smoothie bowl, I called it the best ever healthy chocolate smoothie bowl and I thought, this must go on the website! She gave me the recipe and mentioned that she probably enjoyed 2 serves but she’s breast feeding and extra hungry these days (haha).
It’s been a while since we’ve shared a recipe that captures our old mantra: ‘quick, easy, and delish’. That’s what brought us here in the first place, our passion for discovering and sharing healthy, simple recipes with real ingredients.
Our journey began back in 2012 with the paleo diet, shifted to sugar-free, ventured into keto, moved past dieting altogether and then into a love affair with Italian cuisine and food traditions (which is still happening).
Through it all, I’ve realised that our approach to diet and healthy eating can be both simple and delicious.
When I think about my relationship with food, a few personal guidelines come to mind:
Focus on eating as much wholesome, real food as possible. Don’t eliminate food groups unless you have allergies. Don’t stress about meal times or restrict portions. Eat when you’re hungry, and yes, go out for that delicious ‘unhealthy’ dinner. Embrace the love and fun in food. Don’t eat when you’re not hungry (doesn’t happen so much when you have less restriction). Stay hydrated. And if you feel like it, enjoy that glass of wine, especially when it’s shared in great company and paired with fantastic food.
I want to remind you that I struggled with bulimia for years. I obsessively dieted and binged. For a long time, my thoughts revolved around diet, calories, exercise, how I perceived my body and the weight I felt I needed to lose.
I am so grateful for my journey with self-acceptance through Pilates, Yoga and meditation. It rescued me from the consuming and endless cycle of those destructive thoughts.
And as Meryl Streep puts it…
Don’t waste so much time thinking about how much you weigh. There is no more mind-numbing, boring, idiotic, self-destructive diversion from the fun of living.
Alright, let’s get to this best-ever healthy chocolate smoothie bowl!
This smoothie bowl is created with simple, wholesome ingredients. Although we don’t follow any diet, we still try and eat as much nutritious wholesome food as possible. We also focus on eating food that makes us feel good. As winter on the Gold Coast is often filled with warm sunny days, smoothie bowls have started to make a reappearance at lunch time!
This bowl is packed with good stuff:
Bananas
A natural sweetener packed with potassium. Once upon a time, we placed a total ban on all bananas and sugary fruits. I mean it got to the point where we were almost afraid to eat a little bit of banana. If you feel good eating banana, eat the banana! It’s an amazing source of energy too.
Protein Powder
Although we don’t want to go deep into counting macros, protein is important and it’s easy to not get enough in! This is why we love adding a protein powder supplement. We chose to go with a natural protein powder, at the moment we are using this Raw Amazonia brand (find it here) we like the chocolate and vanilla flavours!
Milk of Your Choice
this way it’s perfect for any dietary preference. We go with coconut milk, we love the Pure Harvest brand of coconut, almond and oat milk, for us the taste is superior and there are not many extra weird-looking ingredients.
Greek Yogurt
Creates the creamy texture of the smoothie, adds protein PLUS all good gut loving probiotics.
Cacao Powder
For that rich chocolatey flavour plus high in antioxidants and magnesium. Chocolate makes everything better! We also make sure we are stocked with cacao powder!
Peanut Butter
Do we need to say anymore? Flavour factor.
Avocado
Adds even extra creaminess plus it’s nutrient-dense and filled with healthy fats.
Now, it’s your turn! Whip up this nutritious bowl and enjoy. Snap a photo of your creation and share it on social media, don’t forget to tag us @themerrymakersisters or use #MerryBody so we can admire your beautiful bowls!
Always merrymaking,
Emma (And Carla, who is currently busy on maternity leave)
