Share your top 3 tips for optimal health and wellbeing…

  • For optimal health lower inflammation in the body. Foods that contribute to inflammation in the body are saturated fats from poorly fed animals and animals fed and finished on genetically modified corn and grains, antibiotics and hormones. Trans-fats from margarine, shortening and hydrogenated oils are also huge contributor. When it comes to eating fats and oils, it’s  important to avoid a diet high in omega-6 and low in omega-3 fatty acids, as this unhealthy balance leads to an increase in cytokines; which are proteins released in the cells which trigger inflammation.
  • For optimal wellbeing have a gentle exercise routine. Exercise creates the conditions under which the body is forced to breathe deeply, increase circulation and excrete sweat. Exercise improves detoxification simply by getting the detoxifying organs and systems ‘moving’.  The lymph system, unlike the circulatory system doesn’t have an inbuilt ‘pump’, and therefore relies on body brushing, massage and bodily movement to get it functioning. Digestive function is also improved through exercise; functioning more optimally and regularly, with consistent physical movement. Gentle and incidental exercise is wonderful for detoxifying the skin as it gets the body moving, the heart pumping, and the lungs breathing deeply. Walking, light jogging, swimming, bike riding, yoga and pilates are all ideal exercise options. Housework is a great example of incidental exercise you don’t need to exercise in an artificial environment to achieve the benefits. Everyday exercise is what counts the most.
  • Drink your greens Organic, green vegetables are highly detoxifying, but let’s face it, at times it can be incredibly difficult to chow down on enough spinach and celery to get a highly effective result. That’s where your juicer will come in handy, particularly in the mornings when you want to have something nutritious on the run.  In just one glass of juice, you can consume a huge amount of green vegetables, and with the fibrous content removed, the powerful cocktail of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, phytonutrients and enzymes will be able to penetrate your bloodstream within minutes. Green juices cleanse, purify and oxygenate the blood; increasing circulation and flushing harmful toxins from your organs. When you are making your green juice adding herbs such as parsley and coriander will really supercharge your juice’s detoxification capabilities. Coriander binds with heavy metals; releasing them from the body and parsley contains potent amounts of chlorophyll which is known for cleansing the entire system, including the skin.  I like to base my green juice on less bitter greens like cucumber and celery, and then add a little lemon or lime to the juice or add coconut water will help give you a sweeter flavour.
