Change your life in 5 minutes with our 5 reasons not to watch TV.

We moved into our new house about 3 months ago. We love our house, it has an awesome, relaxed and creative energy about it. Merrymaker mum painted all the walls to freshen it up and she even painted our front door pink. Yes, we love it! In fact, it might be a coincidence but we have found that all of our house guests feel right at home and just never want to leave… one time a friend stayed til midnight… on a ‘school’ night! We were super tired the next day.

When we moved into our house we decided that we didn’t need to hook up our TV to the antenna thingy. This was a very very very very good decision. Especially for 2 busy bloggers who are continuously connected to technology and already distracted by a million other things!

You want to change your life in 5 minutes? Our tip: take 5 minutes today unplugging your TV and try out a TV-free house for a day, then two days and maybe a week.

Trust us, your life WILL CHANGE. Here’s our 5 reasons not to watch TV.

We can thank Darren Rowse from Pro Blogger for helping us to make this decision. When we attended the ProBlogger 2013 conference (to become pro bloggers haha) he mentioned that if you watch TV for 2.5 hours a day errrrrryday and live till your 80 this ends up being like 8 years of your whole life sitting on your butt watching TV (true story). This idea actually made us physically sick. So no TV for us… and FAR OUT we get so much more done!

Now we won’t lie we do have a small TV and DVD player hooked up. Everyone who sees our little TV laughs a lot, especially when they see our big Apple Mac which is triple the size. The DVD player and TV is used for foodie documentaries and Sex & the City marathons (this is necessary for break up recovery…  but this is a whole other blog post hmmmm or series!) We have also discovered the series Girls, we are sticking to only New York based shows as we want to visit next year and this will help (obviously!).

The Becoming Minimalist blog by Joshua Becker was another influence for us not to watch TV. Joshua describes his site as

“…a site designed to inspire you to pursue your greatest passions in life by owning fewer possessions. It is based on the realization that there are far more important things in life to accomplish.”

We don’t read all the posts but they really help us remember what the important things are in life. To sit back and enjoy the journey. To realise that money and ‘stuff’ doesn’t make us happy.

Here’s our 5 reasons not to watch TV all summed up nicely…

1. You get SO much more stuff done.

Stuff that is focused on YOUR life, YOUR wellbeing, not the lives of the characters on shows or random reality TV stars. The stuff you get done could be exercising, errands or how about fulfilling goals and dreams?!

2. You get to spend more quality time with loved ones.

Instead of sitting around watching TV in silence get talking, eating, laughing, moving or whatevering! Even when we go to others’ places for catch ups we make sure the TV is switched off… they don’t mind!

3. You save money!

Cheaper electricity and no Foxtel bills = good!

4. It’s boring.

Think about it… it’s really quite odd to spend hours every day or night watching TV.

5. It’s bad for your health and wellbeing.

Sitting for long periods of time is bad enough but watching all that crap TV can’t be good for our brains either.

Do you love TV or despise it… how much TV do you guys watch? We’d love to hear from you!

Always merrymaking,

Emma + Carla
