The Real Reason So Many Women Stop Exercising (and how to start again in 2026)

The Real Reason So Many Women Stop Exercising and how to start again in 2026

What is the main reason behind why so many stop exercising? One of the most common messages we receive inside the MerryBody community isn’t about struggles with weight loss, flexibility or results.

The messages inside our Yoga and Pilates community sound more like this:

“I just can’t seem to stay consistent anymore.”
“I used to be so good at exercising… now I stop and start.”
“I want to move, but I don’t have the energy or time.”
“I don’t know why it feels harder than it used to.”

And almost always, it comes with frustration… or guilt.

Because women assume something is wrong with their motivation. But after years of teaching thousands of women Yoga and Pilates, we’ve noticed something important:

It’s rarely a motivation problem.

It’s a relationship problem.

Not a relationship with your discipline.

A relationship with exercise itself.

And once upon a time, maybe you had way more time to devote to your exercise. But life changes.

Stress increases. Sleep shifts. Energy drops. Schedules fill. Life gets busy. Really busy!

It’s not a laziness problem, it’s not lack of motivation… it’s a you can’t be 3 people at the same time and get everything done problem!

And then once movement feels draining instead of supportive, your consistency disappears… even if you still want to do it.

Exercise used to be about changing your body

For years we were told movement was to:

Lose weight
Tone up
Burn calories
Earn food (especially dessert)

So we pushed harder.

Then harder stopped “working.”

You also got tired.
You got sore.
You got inconsistent.

Maybe, if you were like us, you got sick, lost your period and got tired of diet culture and impossible beauty ideals. Yes!

The 2026 shift: energy, not effort

Something has shifted in the wellness world lately. Well, for the people who have managed to escape diet culture and skip the skinny tok craze.

In many spaces, the focus isn’t intensity anymore, it’s regulation.
Less quick fixes, more sustainability.
Less chasing results, more building on healthy habits for the long term.

People aren’t asking:
“How do I push myself?”

They’re asking:
“How do I feel better daily?” We will add on… feel better in your mind and body.

This is all so important because modern life isn’t just physically demanding anymore. It’s mentally demanding.

You don’t always need harder workouts. You need nourishing movement your body (and mind and nervous system!) actually wants to come back to.

Why traditional fitness keeps failing people

Most programs, and maybe some old beliefs, tell us:
If it works, it has to be hard. It must be sweaty, exhausting and make you so sore you can barely walk the next day.

But what if that’s exactly why your consistency disappears?

It’s easy to do a workout on Monday, maybe even again Wednesday… and then suddenly two weeks pass before the next one.

What if your brain measures something different:

Safe = repeatable
Repeatable = habit
Habit = results

Habit formation: behaviours repeat when they feel simple and rewarding (James Clear habit research).

And when you think about it, the body and mind do not transform from intensity… alone.

They transforms from continuity. From consistency.

This is why so many people people succeed walking daily but fail 6-week intense shred programs. Why 20 minutes of daily Yoga and Pilates, is way better than an hour studio class every fortnight.

So it’s important to ask yourself, what’s easier for you to stick with?

Consistency beats effort.

Always.

What actually rebuilds a movement habit

What if it doesn’t begin with motivation. What if you restart your fitness journey with a sense of relief. Like when you finish a Yoga class and feel like you have worked your body but also so calm in the mind. Ahhhhh…. that feels better!

Relief will welcome your return to the workout again and again.

Maybe the best the question you can ask yourself it…

What type of movement do I want to repeat tomorrow?

And what is actually possible?

Because perhaps your mind and body don’t want to repeat the punishment workout.

Perhaps your life schedule does not offer space for the studio class or gym session.

The 3 stages of starting again

1. Safe

Your body trusts movement again, You finish your workout feeling calmer than when you started.

2. Capable

Strength returns. You feel fit once again. Daily life actions feels easier

3. Natural

Movement stops being a task. It becomes part of your day

This is how exercise becomes more permanent in life.

Why short daily movement works better than big workouts

10-30 minutes of daily exercise changes behaviour more than a 60-minute workout twice a week.

Because habit strength depends on frequency, not duration.

You stop “trying to exercise”… you become someone who consistency moves, who ticks of daily exercise with ease.

What to look for in a modern movement routine

The best programs now include:

  • strength
  • cardio
  • mobility
  • breath
  • nervous system down-regulation
  • repeatability

Not punishment.
Not exhaustion.
Not all-or-nothing.

You are looking for the THING that welcomes the daily return.

If you feel stuck, nothing is wrong with you

You didn’t fail exercise.

Your schedule changed, and your stress levels went through the roof.
Your nervous system changed, and what you used to do with ease… you can’t do anymore. Or somehting like this!

With life shifts, with big changes… your movement style needed to change too.

The simplest way to start again

Start small enough so your mind doesn’t resist.

10–30 minutes.
At home, no preparation needed, an easy plan to follow.

It really can be this simple… and maybe that’s what we all need to remember with any goal we want to welcome in. Sometimes it’s easier than we think. It makes us think of that boxing movie scene. They’re strangely inspiring to us… even though we can’t handle the head knocks or the blood.

Also, full confession: we still know every word to Eye of the Tiger… you’ve seen Rocky right? We were swimmers, and our head swim coach made the whole squad learn it and sing it at comp days. I mean it was pretty fun!
