I never wanted to teach Yoga…

never-wanted-to-teach-yoga

My first Yoga class I ever attended was with my Mum at the local gym, I was 13.

Back then, I’d go to the Yoga class to go over my to-do list. Emma and my best friend Chloe would often be there and right before Savasana, we’d quickly roll up our mats and tip toe out of the room so we could catch up about the day. I still feel sad about all those Savasanas I missed 😜

It wasn’t until I turned 20 that I started to understand the real power and benefit of a Yoga practice.

I started to wonder, why do I feel so good after this Yoga class? Especially in comparison to my other workout classes?

You see, my usual workouts were 5.30am starts, cycling sessions, throwing weights around, HIIT, 21km runs.

I thought, anything that got my heart rate through the roof and left me feeling depleted of energy and sore the next day was the ‘right’ workout, the only workout worth my time.

Yoga always left me with a different feeling.

Yoga always left me feeling full, nourished and nurtured.

Yoga always left me feeling happier and lighter (energetically speaking, like a weight was off my shoulders).

Yoga always inspired me to be kind… to myself and to others.

Yoga left my body feeling loved and cared for.

So I started going to Yoga more.

Fast forward to 2017, age 26…

One day, walking up the stairs to the Yoga Studio, I picked up a brochure. It was details on the upcoming Yoga Teacher Training. In that moment I thought to myself…

I’m going to do this one day.

I never wanted to teach Yoga but I wanted to understand the WHY behind the practice.

Why did my Yoga class leave me feeling SO different? It can’t just be the movement… there has got to be more to this.

I floated out of the class, brochure in my hand, still thinking…

I’m going to do this one day.

At the same time, our business was having a cross roads moment.

We no longer were feeling the same bliss and excitement (back then it was all about food, meal plans and recipes).

We really felt if we were going to keep this going, we needed to take a break to figure out our next steps.

At that same moment in time, as if fate was on my side, the next Yoga Teacher Training cohort was about to begin.

So I jumped in. I said YES to that inkling I’d been feeling. The inkling of…

There’s got to be more to this Yoga thing?!

I can look back now and feel so grateful for the courage I had to jump into something completely new.

It’s not easy to say yes to learning as an adult. As it’s not compulsory, we have to dig a little deeper into that motivation pocket. We have to remind ourselves…

When I learn something new, I grow.

When I step outside my comfort zone, magic happens.

When I do something I’ve never done before, I change.

And that’s exactly what happened when I did my first ever Yoga Teacher Training.

All those years questioning, why do I feel so good, were finally answered.

I was absolutely blown away by the Yoga philosophy and life teachings.

I couldn’t believe that there was, what I like to call, a blueprint for living that was aligned…

With kindness.

With acceptance.

With love.

With humility.

With integrity.

With care.

With enthusiasm!

Every day at training my mind was blown. Every day at training my heart burst open a little more.

In the end, as you know, I did end up teaching (we made MerryBody!). In fact, I started teaching as soon as I graduated because I simply LOVED it. The bliss that had been lost was alive and fiery again!
