How to Know Exactly What Your Body Needs Right Now (Strength, Mobility or Calm)

What your body needs - strength and mobility exercises

If you’ve ever searched “best exercises for women over 40” or insert other age or “how to stay flexible as you age,” you’ve probably been hit with a hundred different answers. Lift heavy. Do HIIT. Try this 30-day challenge. Stretch more. Rest more. Do more. Do less.

It’s overwhelming. And most of us end up guessing… picking whatever sounds good in the moment and hoping it helps.

But here’s the thing: your body already knows what it needs. You just need a way to listen.

Most People Guess What Their Body Needs

We see this all the time. Women who are doing something, walking, gym classes, maybe a bit of stretching here and there, but still feeling stiff, sore, tired or stuck.

Not because they’re not trying. But because the movement they’re doing doesn’t match what their body actually needs right now.

Maybe you need more mobility, but you’re only doing strength work. Maybe your nervous system is exhausted, but you keep pushing through high-intensity classes. Maybe you need to rebuild from the ground up, but you’re following a program designed for someone at a completely different stage in life.

When there’s a mismatch between what you’re doing and what your body needs, progress stalls… and movement starts to feel frustrating instead of helpful.

Why Random Workouts Don’t Work

There’s nothing wrong with variety. But there is somehting magic when you stick to something also!

Lasting results come from:

  • consistency (doing something regularly, not just when motivation strikes)
  • progression (building on what you did last week, not starting from scratch)
  • balance (working on the areas that need it most, not just the ones that feel easiest)

The 3 Things Every Body Needs

No matter your age, fitness level or experience, every body needs three things to move well and feel good long-term:

1. Strength

Not just “being strong” in the gym sense. Functional strength, the kind that helps you carry things, get up off the floor, hold your posture and feel stable in your body.

Pilates is one of the most effective ways to build this kind of strength. It targets your deep stabilising muscles, your core, glutes, hips, in a way that carries over into everyday life. You don’t need to lift heavy to build real strength. You need to move with intention, consistently.

2. Mobility

Mobility is your ability to move freely, to bend, twist, reach and squat without stiffness or restriction. It’s different from flexibility (which is more about how far a muscle can stretch). Mobility is about how well your joints move through their full range.

Without mobility, even strong bodies feel stuck. Yoga is one of the best ways to maintain and improve mobility because it moves your body through a wide range of positions, opens up tight areas and helps you breathe into places that hold tension.

3. Nervous System Support

This is the one most people overlook — and it might be the most important.

Your nervous system controls everything: how tense your muscles are, how well you sleep, how quickly you recover, how calm or anxious you feel. When your nervous system is stuck in a stressed state, your body tightens up, your energy drops, and movement feels harder than it should.

Breathwork, meditation and mindful movement (like Yoga and Pilates) help regulate your nervous system. They bring your body back to a calm, grounded state where healing, recovery and progress can actually happen.

When all three of these are in balance, strength, mobility and nervous system support, everything changes. You feel lighter, more capable, more at home in your body.
