Finding Your Flow: A Beginner’s Guide to Yoga at Home

Finding Your Flow - A Beginners Guide to Yoga at Home

Are you finally ready to create a consistent Yoga at home practice? YHave you felt the moment of inspiration? Perhaps you’ve been reading the Yoga books and quotes. Saving the positive affirmations. Getting the “this is your sign” posts on Instagram to begin again. You feel that spark of inspiration flicker and think: I want to feel like this all the time. Or I want to do something with this feeling, instead of letting it pass.

Whether you’ve never touched a yoga mat or you tried a class years ago and felt totally lost… this guide is for you. No experience needed. No flexibility required (seriously). No judgement, ever.

Just you, your living room and 10 minutes.

Let’s find your flow.

Why Yoga at Home Is Perfect for Beginners

Here’s the thing about starting yoga, the biggest barrier isn’t the poses. It’s the feeling that you need to be “ready” first. Flexible enough. Fit enough. Calm enough.

We get it. We’ve been there! When we (hi, we’re Emma and Carla) first started yoga, Carla was the flexible one and Emma could barely touch her toes. But yoga isn’t about how flexible you are before you start. It’s about showing up and breathing. That’s it.

Starting your yoga practice at home removes so many barriers:

  • No one’s watching. You can wobble, fall, laugh and try again without a room full of strangers.
  • You control the pace. Pause, rewind, take a break in child’s pose, whatever you need.
  • It fits YOUR schedule. 6am before the kids wake up? 9pm after dinner? Lunch break between meetings? All perfect.
  • No commute, no cost barrier. You just need a small space and something to follow along with.

Beginner yoga at home is actually better for many people, rather than jumping straight into a studio. You build confidence in a safe space, learn at your own pace and start creating a habit that sticks… because it fits into real life.

What You Actually Need to Start (Spoiler it’s Not Much)

One of our favourite things about yoga is how accessible it is. You don’t need a wall full of equipment or an Instagram-worthy studio setup. Here’s your actual checklist:

Essential:

  • A yoga mat (or even a towel on carpet)
  • Comfortable clothes you can move in
  • A guided class to follow (more on this below)

Nice to have but not necessary:

  • A water bottle nearby
  • A quiet-ish space (kids and pets are welcome… they add character haha)

That’s it. No blocks, no straps, no fancy yoga pants. When we teach our MerryBody yoga classes, we intentionally skip the props. We always offer variations so every pose works for every body, no extras required.

Your First Yoga Session: What to Expect

If you’re picturing yourself twisted into a pretzel… breathe. A gentle yoga class for beginners looks nothing like those Instagram posts.

Our classes are designed to help you feel better when you finish than when you started.

Here’s the vibe:

We arrive.
A few moments to breathe and shift out of go-go-go mode.

We warm up.
Gentle, feel-good movement to wake up the body. Always.

We move.
Sometimes grounded.
Sometimes standing.
Sometimes strength-focused Pilates.
Sometimes stretchy yoga.

Every class is clearly labelled (Beginner, Intermediate, Challenge), and when we teach together, one of us shows modifications… so you always have an option that works for YOU.

We close.
A stretch, a breath, a reset.

Classes are 10–30 minutes. Not every session includes everything… and that’s okay. Consistency over perfection.

You start where you are.

5 Tips for Starting a Yoga Practice at Home

We’ve been teaching online yoga classes for beginners since 2017, and we’ve helped thousands of people find their flow from home. Here’s what we always share:

1. Start shorter than you think

Forget hour-long classes. Start with 10-15 minutes. That’s enough to feel the benefits without feeling overwhelmed. Some of our most popular classes inside MerryBody are just 10-15 minutes long, and our members tell us they’re game-changers.

2. Let go of “doing it right”

There is no perfect in yoga. There’s only your version. If a pose doesn’t feel right, modify it. If you need a break, take one. If you fall out of a balance pose… welcome to the club. The goal isn’t perfection. The goal is showing up.

3. Follow a guided class

Trying to piece together poses from YouTube clips can feel overwhelming and confusing. Following a structured, guided class with a qualified teacher makes all the difference. You’ll learn about alignment, stay safe and actually enjoy the experience. We recommend starting with a beginner program that builds your foundations step by step… like the Foundation Program inside MerryBody.

4. Create a tiny ritual

Habits stick when they’re attached to something. Roll out your mat the night before. Put on your favourite yoga song as your “start” signal. Light a candle. Make it a moment you look forward to, not another item on the to-do list.

5. Move with your energy, not against it

Some days you’ll want a strong, sweaty flow. Other days, a gentle stretch on the floor is exactly what your body needs. Both are yoga. Both count. The best practice is the one that meets you where you are today.

How Yoga Changes More Than Your Body

We started our yoga journey in our teens, practising with our mum at the gym. At the time, we just thought it was nice stretching. But over the years, yoga has transformed how we feel… inside and out.

Yes, you’ll get stronger. Yes, you’ll become more flexible. But here’s what people don’t always talk about:

  • You sleep better. When your body learns to release tension, your mind follows.
  • Your stress response shifts. That breath-and-body connection you build on the mat starts showing up everywhere — in traffic, in hard conversations, in those 3pm energy crashes.
  • You start being kinder to yourself. This is the big one. When you practise moving your body with acceptance rather than punishment, something shifts. You stop exercising to “fix” yourself and start moving because it feels good.

This is exactly why we created MerryBody… it’s not just yoga and Pilates classes. It’s movement paired with the mindset of self-acceptance. And this will completely change how you feel about your body, it will help you move through negative body image and towards a better relationship with your self image.

Finding the Right Online Yoga Classes for You

Not all yoga content is created equal, especially for beginners. Here’s what to look for:

A qualified teacher who explains alignment cues clearly
Modifications shown (not just described) so you can see your options
Short class options (10-20 minutes) so you can build consistency
A supportive community — even online, connection matters

We built MerryBody with all of this in mind. Every class has two of us teaching (hello, built-in modifications!), classes range from 10-30 minutes, and we release a new class every single Monday so it always stays fresh and exciting. We also have a beginner Foundation Program that takes you through the most common poses step by step, so you build confidence before diving into the full library of 850+ classes.

And the community? It’s the kind where members message us saying things like:

“I never thought I’d be someone who does yoga. Now I can’t imagine my week without it.”

“The foundation classes gave me so much confidence. I actually look forward to getting on the mat now!”
