Is Your Solar Plexus Chakra blocked? Here’s how to awaken it!

The Chakra that we are asked about most often is the Solar Plexus Chakra. This is the energy center that is linked to your inner confidence and your personal power.

Questions like: is my solar plexus chakra blocked?! How do I know if my solar plexus chakra is aligned? Can my solar plexus chakra be overactive?!

When you begin to look into the Chakra system, it’s easy to get overwhelmed and attached to the balance of everything. But let’s remember what the Chakras are actually about…

The Chakra system is an ancient wisdom that allows you to bring awareness to your body, mind, heart and soul. It’s a system that invites you to gaze inward, to understand yourself better, to uncover the true you.

This system is not here for you to judge yourself, it’s certainly not here to replace modern medicine, it’s simply a guide to becoming more in tune to you.

In the main Chakra system there are 7 energy centers. These Chakras (which in Sanskrit translate to wheels), start at the base of the spine, with your Root Chakra, or Muladhara Chakra and travels all the way up to the crown of your head where you’ll meet your Crown Chakra, or Sahasrara.

Each Chakra is linked to different areas of the physical body, energetic body and your emotions.

So what is the Solar Plexus Chakra?

The Solar Plexus Chakra is the third Chakra in the main system. Here’s the order from top down:

Crown Chakra – Sahasrara

Third Eye Chakra – Anja

Throat Chakra – Vishuddi

Heart Chakra – Anahata

Solar Plexus Chakra – Manipura

Sacral Chakra – Svadhisthana

Base or Root Chakra – Muladhara

The Solar Plexus Chakra, is also called Manipura Chakra in Sanskrit. Manipura translates to ‘city of jewels’, ‘resplendent gem’ or ‘lustrous gem’.

Physically speaking, this energy wheel is located just above your belly button and just underneath your sternum. Right in the middle of you.

When Your Solar Plexus Chakra is Blocked…

So how do you know if this energy center is blocked? Your thought patterns may be focused on everything you “can’t do” or how “nothing ever goes my way” and “why even bother trying… because I’m not good enough.” It’s that victim mentality and helplessness that you may be feeling.

You may feel flat negative energy vibes, even though everything around you is going well.

Your control issues may also be at an all time high. Letting go or surrendering is not an option.

You may lack self belief. You may feel a little lacklustre.

You know there’s something you want to do or create or achieve but you can’t find the motivation or self belief to take that first step.

You may feel a little (or a lot) stuck. You don’t quite feel like you. You may feel out of touch with who you are and disconnected to your loved ones.

Physically, you may have digestive issues. But that could also be that you ate your breakfast while driving because you were running late for work?

When Your Solar Plexus Chakra is Aligned and Open…

Alternatively, how do you know when the Solar Plexus is aligned, open and balanced?

You could describe it as a very content feeling. A feeling of being at home within yourself. You may feel an inner confidence beam out of you. You are self-motivated easily. You have a deep sense of purpose that invites you to step forward calmly yet intensely. Decision-making will feel like a breeze and your thought patterns will lean more toward positive affirmations about yourself, encouraging words like “I can do that!” or “If I just try my best!” or “I don’t know how… but I’m going to find out!”

Physically, your digestive system will feel like it’s working well, which gives you that bonus pep in your step.

Yes! Your Solar Plexus can be overactive!

Your Chakras can be blocked, balanced or overactive. For your Solar Plexus to be overactive you might have an unrealistic view of your capabilities.

As with a blocked Solar Plexus, you may still have that need to control others and judge harshly. It is an overstimulated sensation, a critical mind and a stubborn attitude.

Balancing the Solar Plexus Chakra

Now reflect, take some time to figure out whether your Solar Plexus is blocked, aligned or overactive. Don’t overthink it, the first thing you think of is usually correct.

What now?

Firstly, you remind yourself that this is just a tool to better understand yourself. It doesn’t mean there’s anything ‘wrong’ with you.

Secondly, it’s time to set some intentions!

If it’s blocked or overactive, a balancing of the Solar Plexus Chakra is what you can focus on. There are many ways you can intentionally start to work with your Chakras.

Our favourite is with Yoga. Both the physical postures, mantra and meditation

Really, your Yoga practice can welcome any kind of energy shift, as long as you intentionally decide that is what you’re dedicating your practice to.

However, this can be tricky to begin with, that’s why we would always suggest following a guided class or session that has been specifically designed to awaken or balance this energy within your mind and body.

The Best Yoga Poses for the Solar Plexus Chakra

The physical postures that work best for the Solar Plexus are poses that either stretch, twist or strengthen the core and abdominal area.

To work the core we would suggest poses like Plank Pose, Dolphin Pose and Boat Pose (pictured below). These poses directly engage, strengthen and awaken your core centre. These poses encourage your inner power to be stirred up and ignited.

Opposing to the ab work would be a heart and belly opening back bend. A pose like Bow Pose (pictured below). During this pose the entire front chain of the body is stretched and encourages your inner power to expand.

If you’d like to try a specific class linked to this Chakra, I Am Confident Yoga inside MerryBody Yoga Studio will be perfect for you. It’s a balanced mix of twisting, stretching and strengthening poses to balance the Solar Plexus Chakra.

Mantra and Meditation with Solar Plexus

Of course, you can also balance and awaken this Chakra by sitting and breathing with intention.

Finding a meditation seat you could picture the color yellow swirling and twirling at that point within your body that’s just above the belly button and just below the sternum. You could even rub some essential oil onto that area of your belly.

You could chant (out loud or in your mind) the Bija Mantra (the seed mantra) of this Chakra, which is Ram, say it like: Ruuuuuuuum. Repeat the mantra 108 times.

You could sit and breathe and create your own powerful Mantra… something like: I can do anything. I am confident. I’ve got this.

Keep it simple

Sure this is ancient wisdom but it doesn’t mean you have to over complicate things. Hold the intention of creating inner confidence within your mind, heart and belly center as you move through your day.

It is true that what you focus on: grows. There is no need to go searching high and low for that inner confidence. It’s already within you. The Chakras are simply a tool to help you discover it and allow it to grow.
